Wildcats surge to 58–34 Bi-District win over Longhorns

In bi-district playoffs, the Yorktown Wildcats defeated the Agua Dulce Longhorns 58–34 in Refugio on Thursday night, Nov. 13, to advance.

Yorktown struck first at 5:54 in the opening period when Brody Metting powered in from the 1yard line, though the two-point conversion failed. Agua Dulce answered with a 14yard run and a missed extra point to tie the game 6–6 with 3:34 left in the quarter.

The Longhorns then took a 12–6 lead with a 2-yard run in the final minute of the period. With only seconds remaining, the Wildcats responded in explosive fashion. Metting broke free for a 61yard touchdown with 18 seconds left to tie the contest 12–12 after another missed conversion.

Agua Dulce opened the second quarter with a touchdown and successful two-point try at 9:48, but Yorktown’s offense kept pace. McKenzie Yanta punched in a 5yard rushing score and added the twopoint conversion to even the game at 20– 20 with 7:47 remaining in the half.

From there, the Wildcats took control on both sides of the ball. Metting connected with Brayden Knostman for a 15yard touchdown strike to give Yorktown the lead, then added a 3-yard rushing touchdown to extend it. Agua Dulce tried to stay in reach with a 28-yard touchdown pass, but the Wildcats kept rolling as Metting ripped off touchdown runs of 33 and 60 yards.

The Longhorns found the end zone again on a 45-yard pass with 6:42 left in the fourth, but Yanta answered with a 20yard touchdown run at the 4:36 mark to close out the 58–34 victory.

Head Coach Ryan Knostman praised his team’s effort, stating, “It was a great night to be a Wildcat. I am incredibly proud of how the guys performed. Offensively, we were able to play our type of game — fast and physical. Defensively, as the game went on we were able to make some adjustments and contain Agua Dulce’s potent passing attack. Looking forward to getting back to work and preparing for the Area Round of playoffs.”
