Tough start but plenty of potential displayed by Gobblers

In their season opener against Gregory Portland on Nov. 15, the Gobblers faced a daunting defeat with a final score of 34-67.

The team struggled during the first half finding their rhythm, managing to score only two baskets. The slow start can be attributed to the limited roster, as many players are still engaged with the ongoing football season. However, there were glimpses of promise as the game progressed.

Hunton Rickman emerged as a key player, contributing 14 points, while Ragen Fleming added another 11 to the scoreboard. Joshua McBride and Jasiah Bacon chipped in with 3 points each.

The Gobblers faced another tough opponent on Nov. 18 against Faith Academy, where they fell short again, this time by a score of 58-86. Similar to the matchup against Gregory Portland, the Gobblers found themselves sluggish at the beginning, struggling to find their footing in the first quarter. However, the team showed significant improvement during the second quarter, scoring 21 points and demonstrating their potential to put together solid offensive plays.

They managed to claw their way back to an 11-point difference, by the end of the third quarter. Unfortunately, turnovers in the fourth quarter thwarted their efforts, allowing Faith Academy to maintain control of the game and ultimately secure the victory. Rickman led the scoring charge once again with a remarkable 27 points; Bacon followed with 10 points, while McBride contributed 8.

Under the guidance of new head coach Scott Galloway, the Gobblers have a fresh perspective and a strategic vision aimed at enhancing the team’s performance. The upcoming game against Wimberly on Dec. 2 offers the Gobblers a vital opportunity to regroup, learn from their early setbacks, and demonstrate improvement on the court. These early games are essential for building chemistry and cohesion within the team as they adapt to a new coach and system.

The Lady Gobblers Basketball program is 2-6 early on in the season. A young team looking to improve each week is led by Senior Bailey Staten and Freshman Elena Gomez each averaging 8 points a game. Most recently at the Cole Tournament, the Lady Gobblers captured third place in the silver bracket with Orozco being selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Sophomore Bella Staten led the way with 12 points in the match up. The Lady Gobblers secured a solid 35–25 victory over Pleasanton in tournament play, using strong defense and timely scoring to control the game.

After a tight first half, the Lady Gobblers pulled ahead scoring 13 in the second quarter to put them up by 3 at the half. Cuero maintained momentum until the final buzzer, scoring 12 points in the final quarter to take the win. Gomez led the way with 11 points followed by Bailey Staten and Orozco with 8 a piece. The win added a boost to their tournament play as they headed into the final game against Floresville. Orozco had 14 points in the match against the Tigers, with Demi Morrow adding 8 to the final score 26-49.

The next game for the Lady Gobblers will be on Nov. 24 at The Roost against Victoria East and December 2 at Floresville.
