The Dewitt County Commissioners Court approved the installation of no truck signs along Old Yoakum Road, Christian Road, and Edgar-Leesville Road off U.S. Highway 77, between Cuero and Yoakum, at the Monday, Nov. 24, meeting.
The move approved by a unanimous vote comes in response to repeated incidents where 18-wheelers have become wedged or stranded at railroad crossings and due to sharp, 90-degree turns that leave large trucks unable to navigate the intersections safely.
County officials cited several challenges faced by commercial drivers and local residents: narrow, winding segments and tight turns on Old Yoakum, Christian, and Edgar-Leesville roads; a railroad crossing along the corridor that compounds the risk of trucks bottoming out or getting stuck; the combination of the crossing and the 90-degree intersections creating a hazardous bottleneck that blocks traffic and requires tow services to respond.
