His smile said it all

Many years ago, I was asked to write a poem about the passing of one of my brothers-in-law. He was a good man and had many good features about himself and his legacy. He is well remembered through his family and his contribution to society.

He was a person that did not meet strangers and someone that treated everyone with the same gentle and cordial smile. He was a pleasant person and radiated friendliness in almost every situation. He was a peacemaker; however, he was not going to let anyone trample on himself, family, or friends.

His spirit of giving and caring for others was well known. He enjoyed helping others when he could and expected nothing in return. He was in the business of recreation and many, many families that could not afford the price of admission for every member, enjoyed his generosity of allowing discounts, or many times a free afternoon of fun and relaxation. This was all done with a smile and an attitude of helping someone. He made others smile when he gave away his smile to them. He always remembered the old saying that “Smiling is contagious”.

We are told in Proverbs 15:13, “A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance. But by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.”

A smile by you, in most cases, sends a message to others that you are a person that is inwardly satisfied and full of joy. It gives an attitude of hope to others who may not know the source of your joy and happiness. It often becomes a contagious spirit and the more you smile at others increases their desire to do the same for others.

The second part of that verse also indicates when grief seizes your heart it can be related to others as being in a state of mind that is uncomfortable and troubled. It can break a courageous spirit. This also is contagious.

For us that know Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior have the satisfaction of knowing we will one day depart from this evil world and enjoy the eternal peace and comfort of Heaven with our Lord. For those that are still searching for the inward peace that only God can provide needs to open their heart and accept Him. Many do not accept His peace because they will have to give up the joys and pleasures this sinful world offers. He does not ask you to give up anything, but when you accept Him as your Lord and Savior, the evil desires of the world will fade, and you will become a child of God seeking to please Him. God will change your heart and you will become more composed, quiet, and contented, conscious of being obedient to His service through love.

My brother-in-law knew Jesus personally. People knew him through his actions of kindness, generosity, and gentleness. His smile was infectious and contagious.

I was not able to see him when he was on his death bed. Cancer had taken its toll on his body, but he fought to the very end. My wife was with her sister as they bid him goodbye, and I was told that the last thing he did was look out his window, as if he saw the Lord in all His radiance and glory and gave the biggest smile, they had ever seen him give as he left this world behind.

Prayer: Again, I thank you Lord for the time you have given me on earth. I pray that I have served you in all that I do. Amen.
