Bunch Buddies & Bingo brings seniors together

Bunch Buddies & Bingo brings seniors together

Seniorsfromthecommunity recently gathered at Cuero Regional Hospital for the quarterly Bunch Buddies & Bingo event, held in the hospital’s education classroom Dec. 11.

The free community program offers seniors a welcoming opportunity to connect with others, enjoy a complimentary meal, and receive valuable health education in a relaxed and social setting.

At this quarter’s gathering, Tina Becker, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, Family Nurse Practitioner at Parkside Family Clinic, provided an educational presentation focused on “The Holiday Blues” and the importance of recognizing and addressing mental health concerns during the holiday season.

Becker discussed how the holidays, while joyful for many, can be a difficult time for seniors. Changes in routine, the loss of loved ones, financial stress, health concerns, and increased feelings of isolation can contribute to sadness, anxiety, or depression. She emphasized common warning signs to watch for, including persistent low mood, changes in sleep or appetite, withdrawal from social activities, and loss of interest in things once enjoyed.

During the presentation, Becker also shared practical strategies to help seniors protect their mental health during the holidays. These included staying socially connected, maintaining routines, setting realistic expectations, practicing gratitude, engaging in light physical activity, and reaching out for support from family members, friends, or healthcare providers when needed.

“Recognizing the signs of emotional distress early and knowing when to ask for help is critical,” Becker shared. “Mental health is just as important as physical health, especially during the holiday season.”

The Bunch Buddies & Bingo program continues to serve as an important community outreach initiative, promoting wellness, education, and social connection for local seniors. The group meets quarterly at Cuero Regional Hospital, and all seniors in the community are welcome to attend.
