2025: Remarkable Start for CHS Sports

As the curtain closed on the first half of 2025, Cuero High School sports teams showcased an exhilarating blend of talent and historic achievements, making waves in the sporting community and leaving an indelible mark on their legacy.

January kicked off the year with a bang as the Varsity Girls basketball team achieved a monumental milestone: their 100th win as a collective unit. In a thrilling matchup against Gonzales, star players Aubrey Bowles and Arissa Carbonara both delivered stellar performances, accomplishing double-doubles that fueled the victory. Their dominance set the tone for a promising season, as they prepared to embark on a journey toward state glory.

The excitement continued into February, a month filled with accolades and fierce competition. The 2024 Gobbler Football team made waves by securing the runner-up position in the prestigious Beyond the Game Award, highlighting their commitment both on and off the field. They received a $1,000 grant for service to their community. Furthermore, the Varsity Cheerleaders demonstrated their spirit and skill by reaching the UIL Spirit State Championship Finals, where they impressively placed 18th out of 61 competing teams.

In a fantastic display of athleticism, Kyara Denson made headlines by signing to play volleyball with Hill College, a testament to her hard work and dedication. The future is bright for Denson, who joins the ranks of Cuero athletes pursuing excellence beyond high school sports. Additionally, former Gobbler Football standouts Brandt Patek and Daylon Gips were honored for their outstanding college football season with Hardin-Simmons University, receiving their Conference Championship rings. Their journey serves as an inspiration for current students, reminding them that dedication can lead to success at the next level.

The highlight of February came courtesy of the Lady Gobblers Basketball program, which achieved an extraordinary feat by finishing back-toback champions in their district and eventually advancing to the State Championship Game against Dallas Lincoln. This marked a historic moment for the Lady Gobblers, as it was the first time they had ever qualified for the state game. The students, parents, and fans rallied behind the team, showcasing community spirit and support that fueled the players’ determination to win. The Lady Gobblers came home with the silver medal, but oh what a ride it was to get to the Alamodome.

March arrived with a heartfelt tribute during the Cuero Baseball season opener, celebrating the life and contributions of longtime announcer Dickie Goebel, who passed away earlier in the year. His legacy lives on through memories and moments shared among players and fans, underscoring the tight-knit nature of the Cuero sports community. The Lady Gobbler Powerlifting Team also made headlines in March, as seven athletes qualified for Regionals, culminating in a remarkable third-place finish by Jaide Jones at the State Championships. Her achievement is not only a personal triumph but a reflection of the team’s dedication and hard work.

In tennis, Mia Salazar and Dreyson Knebel shone brightly at the Brackenridge Tennis Invitational, with both securing first and second place respectively. Their remarkable performance exemplified the spirit and competitive edge that defines Cuero Athletics. Meanwhile, the Cuero High School Girls and Boys Varsity Golf Teams placed a commendable second overall at the District Golf Tournament, with Waylon Dietze earning the title of District Champion. Aubrey Bowles committed to Western New Mexico University to play basketball. These accomplishments in March set the stage for even greater achievements later in the season.

The Lady Gobblers and Gobbler Track Teams performed admirably, both finishing second overall at the District level.
