The Republican Women of the Yoakum Area announced the winners of the 16th Annual Constitution Essay Contest Ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 12,, at the Yoakum Community Center.
The winners were chosen from High School Seniors of public and private schools in Lavaca, De-Witt, and Gonzales counties. There were 69 essays submitted. President Laura Wauson introduced Education Committee Co-Chair, Jackie McNerney, to announce this year’s contest winners.
Coming from Nordheim High School were first place winner, Jacob Torres for $1,400 cash prize, Shaylynn Wagner, 2nd Place for $900, and winning Nordheim Government Teacher, Crystal Eichhorn, who received $300. Other winners were Dalyn Knox, 3rd Place for $700 from Moulton High School, and Sytlali Morales, 4th Place for $500 from Gonzales High School.
The Essay Question for the contest this year was regarding a quote by Douglas Murray. Questions: 1. Compare and Contrast, by either supporting or opposing, author Douglas Murray’s quote. 2. How do you believe our society can lessen or even eliminate political violence? 3. Can political violence ever be justified? Give Examples. Students wrote a 2 to 3 page essay double spaced which was not identified by name or school name. The essays were judged by 6 judges on content of ideas, and organization of thought.
Guest Speaker, Texas Judge, Jon West, 13th. Court of Appeals District, Place 5, congratulated all contest winners. Judge West’s presentation focused on basic constitutional underpinnings and a focus on encouraging the next generational to focus on their purpose and path in life highlighting active civic participation.
Students were served a lunch of Bar-B-Q Sandwiches prepared by Baker Brother’s Bar-B-Q from Gonzales, Texas.
RWOYA is a Republican Women’s Organization with men, as associate members from Lavaca, Gonzales, and DeWitt Counties. Meetings are the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 11:30 am. at the Yoakum Community Center, Yoakum, Texas. Lunch is served with freewill donation appreciated. Program Speakers focus on political topics. The RWOYA Mission is to educate voters and support Republican Candidates.
