Major bridge replacement project to start

DeWitt County Precinct 2 Commissioner James Pilchiek announced plans to close Matthew-Adams Road starting in early January for the construction of a new bridge.

The new bridge is being built to remedy a low water crossing at Little Brushy Creek. During heavy rainfall residents and emergency responders are cutoff from access at the hazardous bottleneck.

The project represents a significant investment in the county’s infrastructure and is expected to improve traffic flow and emergency response capabilities, Pilchiek said.

Residents who regularly use Matthew- Adams Road are advised to plan alternative routes beginning Jan. 5. The duration of the closure will depend on construction progress and weather conditions. County officials will provide updates as the project moves forward.

In other action, the court:

• ratified a resolution recognizing Dec. 7 as Tree of Angels Day in DeWitt County.

• approved an order for the placement of “No Thru Truck Traffic” road signs at two key intersections in Precinct 2: at Lockhart Cemetery Road and Old Cuero Road, and at Christian Road and Old Yoakum Road. The signs are designed to reduce heavy truck traffic that have caused trouble when HWY 77 was shut down due to a major vehicle accident and TxDOT re- routed the traffic down Old Yoakum Road. A series of 90 degree turns under a narrow railroad trestle bridge on the detour led to big rigs getting wedged under the bridge.

• approved participation in a regional statewide emergency radio infrastructure system through an Interlocal Agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT). The agreement would support radio tower system upgrades, establish a maintenance plan, and connect De-Witt County to the Greater Austin-Travis County Regional Radio System (GATTRS), enhancing emergency communication capabilities across the region.
