As the heart of the basketball season gets rolling, Cuero High School’s Gobblers and Lady Gobblers basketball teams are heating up for the exciting transitions into district play, in hopes of moving onto the playoffs.
On Tuesday, December 30, the Lady Gobblers faced off against the Weimar Lady Cats, but unfortunately fell short with a final score of 42-54. Despite the loss, the team displayed comradery on the court, working on establishing rhythm and trust in one another. Freshman Elena Gomez and Senior Bailey Staten led the scoring for Cuero, each putting up an impressive 13 points. Their dynamic play highlights the promising future of this young team complemented by experienced players. Moving forward, the Lady Gobblers will travel to Flatonia— ranked among the best— for one final regular-season match before heading into district play. They are set to kick off the district season on January 9 against San Antonio Kennedy, and fans will be eager to see how they adapt when the competition intensifies. Additionally, fans shouldn’t miss the chance to support the Lady Gobblers during their next home game on January 13 against the Gonzales Lady Apaches.
As for the Gobblers, they enjoyed a triumphant victory over the Ingleside Mustangs on January 3, clinching the game with a score of 46-38. Leading the charge was Hunton Rickman, who delivered a stellar performance with 18 second half points. David Leinen also made significant contributions, adding 10 points to the scoreboard. The game, however, was a roller coaster ride of momentum. The Gobblers initially struggled to find their rhythm, trailing 2-11 after the first quarter, with Elias Munoz contributing the lone basket.
The second quarter saw an awakening of sorts as the team gathered itself, closing the gap with a halftime score of 1217. The balance on the court began to flourish, demonstrated by Melo Perez’s 5 points and Munoz finding his groove with additional baskets. The pivotal third quarter proved to be the catalyst for the Gobblers. It was in this quarter that Rickman found his stride, scoring 9 points, and aiding in leveling the game at 25-all.
In the final quarter, the Gobblers’ defense stepped up magnificently, limiting the Mustangs’ scoring opportunities and allowing Cuero to thrive offensively. They delivered an impressive 21 points compared to the Mustangs’ 13, sealing the victory with contributions from Rickman, Leinen, Perez, and contributing players Paydon Flores and Jevan Trevino.
Over the Christmas break, the Gobblers participated in the Giddings Basketball Tournament taking on teams from around Central Texas. On Monday, December 29 the team went 1 and 1 defeating Sealy 67-60, and taking the close loss to Taylor 54-55. Tuesday, December 30, the Gobblers again went 1 and 1 losing to Lexington 52-62, but pulling out a victory in an intense game over Giddings 45-43.
Looking ahead, the Cuero Gobblers will aim to build on this momentum as they face Goliad on January 6 and then head to Karnes City on January 9. The excitement surrounding both teams promises thrilling moments for basketball fans in the Cuero community. With district play on the horizon, every game becomes an important chapter in their journey this season.
