Some things never change, and one of those is people deciding it’s a good time right after the first of the year to improve their habits.
There always is a traditional flow of new faces hitting the gym at the start of the new year to reduce waistlines, tone bodies, improve health and in general look better to feel better about themselves, according to Cuero Regional Hospital BeFit Wellness Center Director Tami Brzozowski.
“For sure,” Brzozowski said. “I have been in the fitness industry for 24 years, and this has never changed. It seems to be a little busier this year, especially in the evenings.”
But Brzozowski notes that while everyone likes to look better, improved appearances are somewhat of an added benefit to the most important reason for regular exercise. Overall physical health is improved by managing weight and strengthening bones and muscles, medical experts agree.
People can boost heart health by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels and enhancing energy levels and sleeping patterns. There is also a reduced risk of chronic diseases like diabetes and cancer when the body functions well. It can also ease pain and disability from conditions like arthritis.
What’s more, regular exercise can improve mental health by improving mood, reducing anxiety and depression, sharpening cognitive functions and improving overall brain health. That helps people become independent and active as they age.
People seem to become more aware of all these benefits after the holidays, Brzozowski said.
“I believe during the holidays we are so busy, so we don’t make time to work out or eat healthy so in the new year everyone is ready to prioritize their health and fitness,” she said.
Unfortunately, with the increased interest in regular exercise after the first of the year, there is also a corresponding high percentage of dropouts within a few weeks or months, Brzozowski added. To reduce the risk of interest fading out, there are some tips on how to make regular exercise a permanent part of life rather than a brief flirtation.
“Find a routine that you actually enjoy and be patient with yourself,” Brzozowski said. “It takes 21 days to create a habit so stick to it for a month, and it will start to become easier to make working out a priority.”
Additionally, finding a workout partner or going to group fitness classes can help with accountability, Brzozowski noted.
“And I always recommend working with a personal trainer to make sure you are on the right path to success,” Brzozowski said.
As an incentive to starting regular exercise, Brzozowski said BeFit Wellness Center is promoting a Slimdown Challenge in January, and nonmembers can join the challenge for $60. They will have access to the gym during the 8-week challenge. There is also a special offer of membership at the Wellnesss Center of three months for $100.
