It is amazing at how big-name sports figures can change the hearts and desire of our younger generation. What they say and do will impact millions of people around the world because of the print media and the airwaves.
Some of the problems we face as a nation can be shortened or stopped if these big-name athletes would stand up and speak up for dignity, morals, character, perseverance, and leadership. Some of the best players in the world, that have a tremendous following from all kinds of people, can be and has been effective in what they say and do. Some of their actions and speech have been good, and some not so good.
Many are standing on the promises of God and their trust in Jesus Christ. They are not ashamed to tell their fans about their faith and many times during post or pre-game interviews profess their trust in Jesus. This is enlightening among their fans, especially the parents of young sports enthusiast, because their lives are intact with the Lord.
The biggest problem we face is that the media will not interview many Christian athletes. The non-Christian ones buy into the world and the political pressures because it is more beneficial to their pocketbooks. It is all about the money instead of standing up for the one that we will spend eternity with. They are looking for the immediate effect of what the world wants us to hear instead on standing with Christ.
The Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 16:13; “Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.” I have noticed that many of the college players are now acknowledging Jesus as their Lord and Savior and not ashamed to tell the world. I see players that are pitching in baseball, praying for guidance and safety. I am seeing players get together before and after games to pray even though some of the rule’s state that they cannot be led by the coaches to do so. I feel sure that the coaches pray on their own and not with the players just to satisfy the worldly values. There is a Christian song, that many of us see in church hymnals, called ‘Take the Name of Jesus with You’. It was written by Lydia Baxter in 1874 at the age of 74. She was bedridden most of her adult life as an invalid, but anyone that visited her came away refreshed because of her energy and love for the Lord. Even though they wanted to help her she would always tell them “I have a very special armor. I have the name of Jesus…” The first verse is: “Take the name of Jesus with you, child of sorrow and of woe.
It will joy and comfort give you, take it then where e’er you go.”
For those of us that know Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior, understand that Jesus is our armor, and He will protect us from the world. I believe that these professional and college athletes understand this also and therefore they profess the love for Him. Many think they must give up their worldly reputations and riches if they accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. I want you to know that Jesus does not ask you to give up anything, but once He comes into your heart and you live your life for Him, those worldly desires mean nothing to you anymore!
Prayer: Thank you Lord for your Love and your protection that you give me. Let me always stand up for you and your saving grace. Amen.
