Basketball fans were treated to a thriller on Jan. 13, as the Cuero Lady Gobblers faced off against the Gonzales Apaches at The Roost in a fierce district matchup.
Both teams came into the game with aspirations of climbing the district standings, and they didn’t disappoint, showcasing a gritty, backand-forth battle.
The game kicked off with a high-energy first quarter, where Elena Gomez quickly made her mark on the court. Scoring eight points in the first frame, she helped keep Cuero competitive, although Gonzales managed to keep it a slim lead, the Lady Gobblers finishing the quarter ahead 10-9. As the second quarter unfolded, the lead continued to shift hands, with the teams exchanging baskets frequently. Despite Cuero’s spirited efforts, Gonzales headed into halftime with a precarious one-point advantage, 18-19.
When the second half rolled around, it was evident that both teams were ready to elevate their play. Elusive and aggressive, several Lady Gobblers stepped up, with Gomez adding six more points to her tally, while teammates Bailey Staten and Katie McElroy each contributed four points. The duo of offensive and defensive resilience kept Cuero in the game, allowing them to inch ahead, finishing the third quarter with a narrow lead of 32-29.
As the final quarter began, excitement rippled through the gym as both teams fought tooth and nail. Cuero’s determination shone through, with four different players scoring, but Gonzales refused to back down. Both teams showcased their skills, with Gonzales netting 11 points in the quarter to match Cuero’s effort, resulting in a nail-biting tie at the end of regulation at 40-40.
The overtime period brought even more intensity as the stakes escalated. Cuero pushed through, motivated by strong performances, especially from the freshman Gomez. However, in a heartbreaking twist, Cuero faltered at the finish line, falling short to Gonzales by a slim margin of 47-45. The Apaches’ victory wasn’t just sweet revenge; it also highlighted the determination of both teams, especially as they looked to learn from past encounters.
The Lady Gobblers showed no hesitation in handling San Antonio Memorial, rolling to a decisive victory on the road as they continue to build momentum in district play. On Friday, January 16, the Lady Gobblers dominated the court with a commanding 66-33 victory. Gomez ended the night with a solid 15 points and 7 steals along with 13 points from Bailey Staten and 10 from Sariyah Williams—Cuero showcased a balanced scoring attack that will be crucial as they progress through the season. Averie Orozco added 9 points to the win with 6 rebounds.
As the season continues, fans can anticipate seeing more of these competitive matchups. With two intense match ups this week: Tuesday, January 20, the ladies will meet up with LaVernia, followed by Navarro on Friday both games set to tip off at The Roost.
