African-American Daule School Renovation

Groundbreaking Groundbreaking for Phase 1 of the Daule School Renovation will be Friday, Jan. 23, at 10 a.m. 301 Daule St. in Cuero. The Cuero Colored High School was founded in 1892 in Cuero and was renamed the Daule School in 1937 for longtime Principal Eugene Daule. A new building was put up in 1948. It closed in 1965 during integration. The groundbreaking follows Martin Luther King Day on Jan. 19 and precedes the start of Black History Month in February. There is a Texas Historical Marker, which was dedicated Jan. 20, at the school noting that it excelled in in academics, agriculture, sports, homemaking, band and choir. It adds that “Daule High School and Cuero Colored High School remind us of the struggles of the black community and their resolution in the face of adversity.” The students at the school traditionally in the early days came from farm families that could only spare the children when they did not have to work. During segregation, black schools suffered unequal funding. There will be VIP remarks prior to the groundbreaking with networking and refreshments following. The renovation is being sponsored by the Tri-City
