A week of high-intensity basketball

District games this week for the Lady Gobblers were a rollercoaster as they faced off against fierce competition in the basketball arena. With the excitement of the fans thrilling the atmosphere, the Lady Gobblers showcased their talents in two contrasting games, highlighting both their strengths and vulnerabilities.

On January 27, the Lady Gobblers hosted the San Antonio Kenedy Rockets at The Roost in a matchup that showcased the squad’s ability to play team-oriented basketball. From the get-go, the Lady Gobblers took control of the game, with the first quarter ending at 16-9 in favor of Cuero. Bailey Staten’s 15 points and Elena Gomez’s impressive 21 points paved the way for a commanding lead by halftime, with the score resting at 31-14.

The third quarter brought a flurry of activity as the Rockets made a valiant effort to close the gap. Outscoring the Lady Gobblers 7-12, they tightened the score to 3826, igniting hope among Rockets fans. However, it was too little too late. Cuero’s defense held strong, and the team rounded out the game with a final score of 54-33 with Sariyah Williams and Averie Orozco contributing valuable points with 6 each. The Lady Gobblers demonstrated poise and teamwork under pressure, a crucial quality as they moved into their next district challenge.

Just days later, on January 30, the Lady Gobblers faced off against their rivals, the Gonzales Lady Apaches. The intensity between the two teams is always present. The first quarter saw the teams trading blows, with Gonzales holding a slight edge at 10-11 by the end of the period. Yet the Lady Gobblers’ resilience shone through as they rallied to take a narrow lead at halftime, 21-19, thanks to standout performances from Gomez with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Demi Morrow adding 12 points and 4 rebounds.

As the second half began, both teams maintained their competitive spirit. Cuero managed to keep their lead, narrowly finishing the third quarter ahead at 31-30. Katie McElroy helped on the defensive side with 7 rebounds However, the fourth quarter saw a dramatic turn of events. The Lady Apaches found their groove, outscoring the Lady Gobblers 817 in the final moments to seal a comeback win with a final score of 39-47.

The Lady Gobblers head into their final district games with a record of 4-3, sitting in second place behind LaVernia. They will take on San Antonio Memorial at the Roost on Tuesday Feb.3 and head to LaVernia on Friday, Feb. 6. The last district game before playoffs begin is on Tuesday, Feb. 10 in Navarro.
