The Lavernia Bears hosted the Cuero Gobblers in what turned out to be an exhilarating district basketball game on Feb. 6. With emotions running high in the packed gym, fans from both sides filled the stands, creating an electric atmosphere that underscored the fierce rivalry between these two teams.
From the opening tip-off, it was clear that the game would be a tightly contested battle. The Cuero Gobblers jumped out to an early lead, finishing the first quarter with a score of 2014. Their strong offensive performance, powered by quick transitions and sharp shooting, sent their fans into a frenzy. However, the Bears soon found their rhythm and began to chip away at the Gobblers’ lead.
By halftime, the momentum had shifted in favor of the Bears, who managed to close the gap slightly while the Gobblers maintained their lead, 35-25. The second quarter saw standout performances, particularly from Elias Munoz, who led all players with an impressive 24 points and 9 rebounds throughout the game. Munoz’s ability to score from various spots on the floor kept the Bears’ defense on their toes and propelled his team to strong offensive runs.
As the game progressed into the second half, both teams showcased their defensive skills , making crucial stops and battling for every rebound. The third quarter ended with the Gobblers holding a slight advantage at 53-42, but the Bears were far from finished. Led by D’zayvion Bonner, who contributed 14 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists, Cuero did their best to maintain the lead in the fourth quarter, demonstrating their drive and want to pull out a district victory.
The final quarter of the game was an intense showdown, with both teams exchanging baskets at a rapid pace. LaVernia managed to close the gap further, and with seconds left on the clock, the score was a nail-biting 73-73, showcasing just how evenly matched these teams were. However, disaster struck for the Gobblers; with just 4 seconds remaining, a costly turnover on a bounce pass in the Bear territory handed the Bears a prime scoring opportunity. With the score 73-75, Coach Galloway called a timeout with a little more than one second left on the clock, but the Gobblers were unable to convert a quick score and succumb to the Bears with a final score of 73-75. The gym erupted in cheers from the Bears’ fans, while the Gobblers were left to reflect on a heartbreaking loss.
This thrilling encounter between the Cuero Gobblers and Lavernia Bears not only added another chapter to their storied rivalry but also showcased the competitive spirit that defines district basketball. David Leinen ended the night with 15 points and 9 rebounds, Paydon Flores 4 points, and a team high 10 assists, and Camelo Perez with 6 points. With standout individual performances and a dramatic finish, this game will be remembered by fans for its intensity and excitement.
The Gobblers head to Panther territory on Tuesday, February 10, and San Antonio Kennedy on Friday, Feb. 13. The Gobblers sit at 5-2 with the only losses being to LaVernia with a total of 8 points between the two games. Cuero will close out district back at home, on Feb. 17 vs. Gonzales, before heading into the playoffs.
