Softball fans, get ready to celebrate, as the Cuero Lady Gobblers have come home with a triumphant performance at the Rice Consolidated Softball Tournament held from Feb. 12 to Feb. 14, going undefeated and being named tournament champions.
The Lady Gobblers took to the field with the tournament kick off on Thursday, Feb. 12, taking on the Sealy Junior Varsity team. From the very first pitch, it was clear that Cuero meant business. The Lady Gobblers’ defense was unstoppable, and their offense was electric. Julianna Cox, Reagan Reitz, and Lexie Herrera all went 2-3. With runs scored in the third and fifth innings, the Lady Gobblers took game one 60 against Sealy JV.
Later that same day, the Lady Gobblers faced off against Palacios, and they continued to showcase their young determination, finishing the game with another 4-0 victory. With strong pitching by Natalie Taylor and solid batting performances by Cox and Natalynn Milliorn who both went 23 in the game. Cuero went to bed that night feeling confident and excited about the next day’s matches.
The action continued on Friday, Feb. 13, when the Lady Gobblers took on the Shiner St. Paul team. In what turned out to be an exhilarating game, Cuero fought hard to secure a 10-7 win. Scoring double digits showcased their capability to produce runs when it mattered most. Herrera led the way going 2-3 and ending the game with 4 RBI’s. Later that day, they dominated Boling with an outstanding 15-0 shutout, leading them into the final day sitting at 4-0. Milliorn went 2-2 in the match up.
As the tournament reached its final day on Saturday, Feb. 14, the Cuero Lady Gobblers faced Rice Consolidated in a match that would further cement their championship hopes. The Lady Gobblers delivered a truly impressive performance, cruising to a whopping 170 victory. Cox led the way going 3-4c. Reitz, Herrera and Caroline Kubesch all added to the victory by going 2-3. This match epitomized their relentless spirit, teamwork, and skill.
In the Championship game, the Lady Gobblers faced Rosenberg Terry Varsity Rangers in an intense finish, which ended in a 3-3 tie. Cox started the game off with an RBI double to put the Lady Gobblers on the board first. Singles from Reitz and Taylor added two more runs in the second, but Rosenberg’s Guerrero hit a 3-run shot in the third to tie up the game.
“Our girls played extremely hard, despite tough conditions on Saturday with the rain. We pitched well, had good at bats and played consistent defense throughout the tournament,” Coach Cody Miller said. “The team is young so we are excited to see how we mature and develop our team’s identity,.”
With a 5-1-1 record, the Lady Gobblers head home on February 17 to face St. Joe, and then to the Cedar Ridge Tournament Feb. 19-21.
