Cuero Gobblers and Lady Gobblers tennis teams shine

For tennis enthusiasts in the Cuero community, the Gobbler and Lady Gobbler Tennis Teams competed fiercely in various tournaments over the past three weeks.

Under the guidance of Coach Edgar Vander Stucken, the teams have shown great progress as they head deeper into the season, making headlines and capturing medals at events such as the Houston Chancellor’s Invitational, Yoakum Bulldog Invitational, and Houston Christian Invitational.

Their most recent performances showcased the heart of the players, as evidenced by their impressive medal haul and overall win percentage during these competitions. With a record of 35 wins and 18 losses, they have established themselves as formidable opponents on the court.

The Houston Chancellor’s Invitational held on Jan. 30 was a strong start for the teams. Logan Garcia and De’Marion Dillworth showcased their outstanding teamwork in the Boy’s Doubles category, finishing first with an undefeated record of 3-0. Their dynamic play and strategic coordination were evident as they secured the top spot against well-prepared rivals. Spencer Pierce and William Weismiller demonstrated commendable performances in the Boy’s Singles, both finishing with a 2-1 record to earn the thirdplace medal. On the girls’ side, Juanita Liendo Clifton marked her presence with a strong 2-1 performance, earning second place. Also contributing to the teams totals were Shauna Root and Mia Salazar.

The following week at the Yoakum Bulldog Invitational on Feb. 4, the teams continued their momentum. Notably, Connor Thigpen emerged victorious in the Boy’s Singles category, finishing with a perfect 4-0 record and clinching the first-place title. His hot streak was critical in helping the team build on their previous successes. Julia Aleman mirrored this performance on the girls’ side, also finishing 4-0 to take home first place. Alongside these standout performances, Liendo achieved another solid result with a 2-1 record, contributing to the girls’ overall totals in this competition.

The Houston Christian Invitational on Feb. 6 brought its own set of challenges, but the Gobblers continued to showcase their resilience. Dillworth once again proved to be a key player, finishing 3-0 to secure first place in Boy’s Singles and earning high praise for his competitive spirit. Garcia and Root also made their marks with commendable 2-1 records, earning them third-place medals. Though some players faced tough matches, the overall team spirit remained high, and the athletes showed remarkable character in the face of competition.

As the season progresses, the Cuero Gobbler and Lady Gobbler tennis teams are not only building on their success but also fostering a strong sense of community and sportsmanship. With eight medalists from three tournaments, the future looks bright for the Cuero season. As they continue to train and compete, tennis fans can look forward to more thrilling matches and impressive performances. Coach Vander Stucken’s leadership coupled with the players’ talent and hard work gives high hopes for the rest of the season, making the Gobblers a team to watch. Gobbler Tennis heads to Brackenridge San Antonio on Feb. 26 and 27.
