The excitement of baseball season is always electric, especially for die-hard fans who have awaited the return of their beloved teams.
For the Gobblers, the season kicked off with a stunning victory over the Yoakum Bulldogs on Tuesday, Feb. 17, held at Bulldog Stadium. This first game set an uplifting tone for the season ahead, showcasing the talent and enthusiasm of this promising roster.
The Gobblers came out swinging, demonstrating their offensive strength from the start. Notable performances from Kyle Bias and Ethan Garrett, who each registered a hit going 1-3, helped lay the groundwork for a successful game. Perhaps the most pivotal moment of the match came courtesy of Christian Ferrier, who delivered a clutch two-RBI double, propelling the Gobblers to a secure lead. The pitching was equally impressive, with Eli Garrett earning the win on the mound by striking out an impressive seven batters.
As the week progressed, the Gobblers wouldn’t have it easy during the highly anticipated Gobbler Classic Baseball tournament. They faced some stiff competition, beginning with a challenging matchup against St. Joseph, where they suffered a narrow defeat, 1-3. Despite the loss, there were bright spots, such as singles by Collin Ferrier, Christian Ferrier, and Bias, showcasing their ability to make contact at the plate.
The Gobblers continued to struggle against Jones JV, falling 3-7 in a game that was competitive until the top of the fifth inning, when Jones exploded for seven runs. However, the resilience of the Gobblers shone through as they regrouped to confront Rockport-Fulton on February 20. Although they faced another tough setback, losing 4-6 due to five costly errors, the Gobblers demonstrated their fighting spirit.
Their determination paid off in an exhilarating nail-biter against El Campo, where the Gobblers emerged victorious with a final score of 65. In this match, Bias and Collin Ferrier excelled once again, each going 2-3 and hitting doubles. The offensive lineup was further bolstered by Will Scott and Christian Ferrier, who each belted a homerun, contributing significantly to the win.
The final game of the tournament showcased the Gobblers’ ability to compete under pressure. Facing off against Ingleside, they triumphed in yet another close battle, edging out their opponents with an 8-7 victory. Christian Ferrier was the standout player, going a remarkable 3-3 at the plate, cranking out a homerun and securing four RBIs. His brother, Collin Ferrier, joined the hot streak, going 2-3 as well, which helped solidify their success in this tournament.
With the tournament behind them and a blend of victories and lessons learned, the Gobblers have laid a strong foundation as they move forward in the season. The Gobblers head to Schulenberg on Tuesday, Feb. 24 for a 6:30 game and then the Yoakum Baseball Tournament over the weekend.
