The Cuero Gobblers and Lady Gobblers showcased their track skills at the Cardinal Relays held in Columbus on Feb. 26.
Not only did the JV and Varsity Boys bring home silver medals, but several athletes placed on an individual basis bringing home more hardware.
In the Junior Varsity boys’ division, the Cuero Gobblers secured an impressive 2nd place team finish. They demonstrated their speed and agility with standout performances in individual events. Notably, Dominic Perez ran a commendable 100 meters, finishing in 6th place, while Lincoln Orosco sprinted to a remarkable 2nd place in the 200 meters. The 400 meters was another strong event for Cuero with Prince SantaCruz finishing 2nd, Jay Molina claiming 3rd, and EJ Gomez close behind in 4th.
The middle-distance events saw Logan Garcia excel; he placed 3rd in the 800 meters and also made a notable effort in the 1600 meters, finishing 4th. Additionally, Joshua McBride and Jevan Trevino proved themselves formidable competitors, each bringing home gold with 1st place finishes in the 110m and 300m hurdles respectively. Relay events were equally thrilling, as the Gobblers’ teams demonstrated energy and speed with a 2nd place finish in both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. The team of Perez, Orosco, Stran Gaitan, and D’zayvion Bonner in 4x100 and Perez, Gaitan, Kaleb Comiskey, Cannon Wilson in 4x200 made significant contributions to the overall team success.
In individual field events, the Cuero athletes continued to impress. TJ Seals finished 2nd in shot put, with Jackson Martin closely following in 3rd. The triple jump event featured Khadren Pullin, who secured 2nd place, while Braxton Bayfus made a strong showing in the high jump with a 3rd place finish.
In the Junior Varsity girls’ division, Jaleija Jackson represented her team with pride, finishing 4th in both the 100m and 200m runs. Alesia Chatman highlighted her talents by claiming 2nd in the 400m and also topped the podium in shot put, finishing in 1st place.
The Varsity boys’ team followed suit with a strong performance, earning 2nd place overall. Dairion White emerged as a standout with a commanding 1st place finish in the 400 meters, while the team’s 4x400 relay team, consisting of Jossiah Taylor, Kaimarye Lopez, Jake Janssen, and Paydon Flores, concluded the competition with a victory. Janssen distinguished himself with a 1st place pole vault achievement, adding to the Gobblers’ successes. Flores also earned 2nd in the 300 hurdles, 5th place high jump and 6th place long jump.
In individual field events, the varsity team continued with placing starting with shotput where K’den Johnson, Jayden Winfield, and Dominic Whited placed 4th, 5th, and 6th respectively. Conner Whitley and Tucker Schley earned points for discus, and Taylor, Pierce Denson, and Luke Moritz pulled out a 1st, 2nd and 4th in the triple jump. Rounding out the field events was Peyton Diebel with a silver in the pole vault.
The girls’ Varsity team held their ground, with Savannah Kroos and Elena Gomez racing to top finishes in the 400m. The relay teams put on an impressive display as well, capturing a 3rd place finish in the 4x400 meters.
The Cuero Gobblers and Lady Gobblers demonstrated resilience, commitment, and sportsmanship throughout the Cardinal Relays. With their impressive performances, they not only contributed to the school’s pride but also inspired their peers and supporters. Track fans can undoubtedly look forward to more excitement from the Gobblers in the season ahead, as they host the Jack Adcock Gobbler Relays on Thursday, March 5, with field events beginning at 10 a.m.
