The Cuero Gobblers opened their season, with a 65-24 loss to the Columbus Cardinals on August 30.

The Cardinals high-powered offense dominated the Gobblers for close to 600 yards and nine touchdowns.

Quarterback Adam Schobel and receiver Grayson Rigdon methodically moved the ball downfield on Columbus’s first possession, before Rigdon went untouched up the middle for a 29yard score. Rigdon finished the night with 255 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.

On their first possession, the Gobblers went for it on 4th and 2, but running back Davyon Varela was stopped short of the line of scrimmage, giving the ball back to the Cardinals. After backto- back penalties on the defense, Schobel connected with wide receiver, Braylon Fisher, for a 19 yard touchdown. The score was 14-0 Cardinals with 8:04 left in the First Quarter. Schobel would finish the night with a total of 5 touchdowns through the air and one on the ground.

After big completions from Jaxxon Marie to Tony Perez and Walker Dietze, the Gobblers' offense stalled at the Columbus 18. Gobbler kicker Jimmy Mejia then put the Gobblers on the scoreboard with a 34-yard field goal, cutting the lead to 14-3.

After returning the kick-off to their own 29yard line, Rigdon took a hand-off up the middle before juking several Gobbler defenders en route to a 71 yard touchdown run. The score was 21-3 with 5:56 left in the first quarter.

On their next drive, Jaxxon Marie used his legs to move the ball downfield with a few nice runs. He then hit Davyon Varela on a screen to the right, and he scored, cutting the lead to 21-10.

Schobel then connected with Fisher again, for a huge pass play for 38 yards to end the quarter. A couple of plays later, Schobel faked a handoff and ran around the right side untouched for a three-yard touchdown.

Jaxxon Marie connected with Walker Dietze, on two 3rd Down plays, to keep the next Gobbler drive alive. He then completed a 27-yard touchdown pass, across the middle of the field, to Brayden Hernandez. The score was 28-17.

Columbus wasted no time moving the ball to the Gobbler 30 before Schobel found Fisher in the end- zone for his second touchdown reception of the night.

After the Gobblers went 3 and out in their next possession, Columbus blocked the punt and the ball bounced out the back of the endzone for a safety.

The Cardinals then marched the ball downfield, running out the clock, and scored the final touchdown of the half, on an 11-yard strike from Schobel to Camden Pitchford. The score was 43-17 at halftime.

Columbus added two more touchdowns in the 3rd Quarter on passes from Schobel to Rigdon and Pitchford. The score was 57-17 heading into the 4th.

The Cardinals would go on to score another touchdown, extending the lead to 65-17. Jaxon Timpone would score on a 4 yard run with :52 seconds left in the ballgame but the Gobblers would go on to lose 65-24.

Standouts for the Gobblers include Walker Dietze, who had 108 yards receiving on 8 catches. Jaxxon Marie was 18-27 for 237 yards and two touchdowns. Varela led the Gobbler rushing attack with 54 yards and a touchdown reception.

When asked how the Gobblers would prepare for the next game, Cornerback Jordan Mays said, “We will watch film and lift weights on Saturday and practice hard.” The Gobblers travel to La Vernia this week to take on the Bears, who defeated SA Burbank, 63-34.
