In an always exciting rivalry showdown, the Cuero Lady Gobblers edged out the LaVernia Lady Bears with an intense 13-10 victory on Friday, March 20. The game, hosted by the Lady Bears, was a rollercoaster of emotion with an unforgettable night at the plate for Julianna Cox.
Cox led the offensive explosion with a remarkable seven RBIs, accounting for a large portion of Cuero’s scoring tally. From the opening inning, the Lady Gobblers set the tone, stringing together timely hits and aggressive base running to put La Vernia on its heels early. Cox, who made her mark by driving in an impressive seven runs, including a powerful double in the second inning that brought home three vital runs, a homerun over the left field wall in the third that scored two, and two sacrifice flies, one in the first inning and another in the sixth, that each added crucial runs to the scoreboard.
The battle for the district win and the backand- forth nature of the game led to a thrilling night as Cuero continued to keep their foot on the gas, scoring five more runs over the next few innings.
In the third inning, the Lady Gobblers displayed their skill as Demi Morrow initiated another scoring drive with a single. Following a series of walks, Bailey Morrow managed a sacrifice fly, bringing in one run, and Laela Mendiola added another with a single. Cox then hit a homerun over the left field wall, resulting in two more runs and extending the Lady Gobblers’ lead to 11-4.
Despite a strong performance from Cuero, the LaVernia Lady Bears were not willing to surrender easily. They kept returning with their own scoring attempts. They showcased their determination to not go down without a fight, in the fourth and sixth innings, accumulating runs and making strategic plays, but the Lady Gobblers managed to stay ahead throughout.
By the time the seventh inning rolled around, the tension reached a peak. The Lady Gobblers had a brief moment of struggle at the plate, going down in order, but the Lady Bears mounted a thrilling comeback. With two timely hits contributing to their run tally, the Lady Bears seemed poised for a dramatic finish. However, Cuero's defensive resilience shone through when Natalynn Milliorn struck out two batters to conclude the game, sealing the victory for the Lady Gobblers at 13-10.
Natalie Taylor took the win for the Lady Gobblers with 4 innings pitched noting 3 strikeouts, 4 walks and 3 earned runs. Milliorn took the save for the Lady Gobblers with 3 innings pitched, 2 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 2 earned runs.
With this win, the Cuero Lady Gobblers remain undefeated in district play, setting the stage for their upcoming home game against Gonzales on Tuesday, March 24, at 7:00 PM.
