Other Gobblers stand outs were Demarion Dillworth and Cooper Linville, who each posted 1-1 records, while the duo of Aiden Slough and Kaleb Esparza finished 1-1 in doubles play.

On the girls side, Juanita Liendo dominated singles competition with a perfect 4-0 record, claiming a gold medal. Maria Gonzales added to the medal count with a 3-1 record and a 2nd place finish in girls singles.

In mixed doubles, Oliver Geiser and Grace Becker earned 3rd place with a 3-1 record, while Jason Wolter and Haleigh Drehr went 1-1. Emma Helfer and Kadence Courtney also brought home bronze in girls doubles, finishing 3-1.

The Cuero team put together an impressive run again at the Cuero Invitational Varsity tournament on Thursday, March 26. William Weissmiller captured 3rd place with a 3-1 record, while Spencer Pierce posted a solid 2-1 showing. Shauna Root led the girls with a 3-1 record and a silver medal finish, and Mia Salazar added a bronze medal with her own 3-1 performance. “Nine medals in one tournament was a high-water mark for us this season,” said Coach Vander Stucken. “A great way to end the regular season. Our players seized the opportunity to win at home, so that’s always fun.”

The home tournament atmosphere provided an extra boost for the Gobblers as they prepare for the postseason. “This home tournament was a great opportunity for our players to tune up their game one last time,” Vander Stucken added. “It has been an up and down season for almost every player, so playing in front of friends and family was a great way to end the season before the district championships.”

Cuero Tennis heads into the District Championships on March 30 and 31 in San Antonio.
