In a night of energy and celebration, Cuero Gobbler Baseball honored 80 years of tradition Tuesday, March 24, paying tribute to generations of players, families, and supporters while earning a 7-1 victory over San Antonio Kennedy moving the Gobblers to 2-0 in district play.
Alumni and former standouts filled the stands and the field for the memorable evening. Among those in attendance were Dale Murray, Rodney Pedraza, Jason Gonzales, Wayne Mathis, and Will Carbonara, joined by a strong showing of former players. Little League and select league players took to the field alongside the Varsity Gobblers for the national anthem sung by Cuero High School student Landri Dyer. Mayor Emil Garza threw out the first pitch to kick off district play at Gobbler Field. Mayor Garza read a special proclamation to those in attendance honoring 80 years of tradition with the Gobbler Baseball program.
Fans were treated to a great game by the Gobblers. As the game kicked off, Kennedy struck first with a run in the top of the second inning on a passed ball. The Gobblers however, answered quickly in the bottom of the third inning when Jossiah Taylor singled on a line drive to left field. The inning continued with a base hit by Lincoln Orosco moving Taylor to third. But the inning was highlighted by a two-RBI double from Will Scott to center field and an RBI single by Collin Ferrier to right. Cuero added some insurance in the fourth when Kyle Bias doubled to left field followed by Walker Dietze with a single to center. The Gobblers continued to control the game the rest of the way, adding another district win in the long line of tradition.
Orosco led the offense, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Christian Ferrier picked up the win on the mound, striking out three, allowing just two hits and one unearned run. The Gobblers will face San Antonio Memorial on Thursday, April 2 at Gobbler Field.
