The Cuero Lady Gobblers had an eventful week on the diamond, competing fiercely in two games that showcased their determination to knock off the eventual District Champions. With one victory against the LaVernia Lady Bears and a tough loss to the Gonzales Lady Apaches, the Lady Gobblers left fans on the edge of their seats.
On Tuesday, April 7, the Lady Gobblers took to their home field to face off against the Lady Bears. The game started off rocky for Cuero, as LaVernia jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning. However, the Lady Gobblers swiftly shook off the early disappointment.
In the bottom of the second, Reagan Reitz sparked a much-needed rally with a linedrive single to center, closely followed by Lexie Herrera’s single to left. Their efforts paid off, as the Lady Gobblers crossed home plate and began chipping away at La-Vernia’s lead, bringing the score to 2-3.
The aftershocks of this early comeback were felt in the third inning when Cuero erupted offensively. Julianna Cox delivered a significant blow with a two-run home run that soared over the center field wall. Following her lead, Reitz launched another shot over left field, adding two more runs. Caroline Kubesch’s remarkable double showcased the team’s potent hitting, even though she was left stranded as they tried to build on their momentum. The inning concluded with Cuero scoring a phenomenal four runs, demonstrating their ability to respond under pressure.
The momentum continued into the fourth inning, where the Lady Gobblers displayed a flurry of offense, scoring six runs. Key hits by Mendiola, Natalie Taylor, and Herrera tallied up runs, while Demi Morrow and Bailey Morrow’s contributions ensured the Lady Bears remained under pressure. The game was capped off in the fifth inning when a walk and an error allowed Natalynn Milliorn to score, bringing the final score to an impressive 13-3 in favor of the Lady Gobblers. Milliorn pitched 5 innings, holding the Lady Bears to 3 hits with 5 strike outs and no earned runs.
However, the excitement didn’t stop there as they faced the Gonzales Lady Apaches on Friday night, April 11. The atmosphere was anxious as the weather delayed game unfolded at Apache Field, with both teams showing grit under pressure. The Lady Apaches struck first, scoring two runs in the first inning, leading Cuero to play from behind for much of the game. The score remained stuck at 0-2 until the fourth inning when a single from Gonzales widened their lead, making it 0-3.
The Lady Gobblers finally found their rhythm in the top of the fifth with two runs, the result of a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from Reitz, putting them back in the game. As the excitement built, Hernandez, running for Herrera, managed to tie the game at 3-3 following Kubesch's impactful double to right field in the sixth.
Fueled by momentum, Cuero pushed ahead with a wild pitch that allowed Reitz to score, tying the game at 4-4 going into the dramatic bottom of the seventh. However, with a walk-off single from Gonzales’s Alexzis Hernandez, the Lady Gobblers succumbed to the pressure, ending the game 4-5 in favor of the Lady Apaches. Milliorn was the pitcher for the game with 6 strikeouts, 2 walks and only 4 earned runs.
The Lady Gobblers will wrap up district play on Tuesday, at home, taking on Navarro.
