CHS dominates at District 28-4A meet

The air was electric at Gobbler Stadium as the District 284A meet led to some thrilling athletic performances from district rivals, including Cuero, Navarro, San Antonio Kennedy, San Antonio Memorial, Gonzales, and La Vernia April 8-9.

This meet not only highlighted the best of the best but also set the stage for the champions to emerge as they prepared to qualify for Area.

Cuero dominated the boys’ competition, emerging as the District 28-4A champions, a title well-earned through hard work, dedication, and outstanding performances across numerous events. Moreover, the Junior Varsity (JV) boys also clinched their championship title, marking a successful two days for Cuero’s track and field program.

The excitement didn’t end there, as several athletes from Cuero qualified for the upcoming Area Meet, which is set to take place on Thursday, April 16, at Gobbler Stadium once again. This is a huge accomplishment as only the top four competitors in each event advance, showcasing the talent within the Cuero track and field program.

In the boys’ events, the 4x100 relay team, consisting of Lincoln Orosco, Jordan Jones, Jossiah Taylor, and Melo Perez, showed remarkable teamwork and speed, securing a 3rd place finish. Additionally, Paydon Flores and Jaxon Marie both excelled in the 110 Hurdles (2nd and 4th) and 300 Hurdles (1st and 2nd.)

The versatility of Cuero's athletes was highlighted in the 4x200 relay, where Orosco, Jake Janssen, Jones, and Perez finished 3rd overall. Individual standout Janssen also made the cut in the 200 and taking the District Champion role in the pole vault. The 4x400 relay, featuring Orosco, Taylor, Janssen, and Flores, promises to be an exciting race at the Area Meet as they aim for another gold medal finish.

Other Cuero athletes excelling include Pierce Denson in the High Jump, and Taylor in both the long and triple jump. The throwing events saw contributions from Conner Whitley and Tucker Schley in the Discus, along with K'den Johnson and Jayden Winfield in Shot Put, all securing their places for the forthcoming meet.

On the girls’ side, Cuero athletes shined brightly as well. The 4x100 relay team of Bailey Staten, Brooklyn Bland, Demi Morrow, and Taylor Gale laid down an impressive 2nd place performance to secure a spot at the Area Meet. Individual talents like Elena Gomez clearly distinguished themselves, qualifying in events such as the 800 meters, 400 meters, and Long Jump.

The 4x200 relay team, also comprised of Staten, Bland, Morrow, and Gale, continued to establish Cuero’s tradition of strong relay teams with a bronze. Furthermore, the 4x400 relay, featuring Staten, Gomez, Alesia Chapman, and Grace Becker, looks promising at Area, with a 3rd place finish in District.

With a successful District 28-4A Meet behind them, Cuero's athletes remain focused and determined as they prepare for the Area Meet. Their hard work, resilience, and support from the community will undoubtedly fuel their desire to push beyond limits and strive for victory.
