Yorktown Secondary School’s Spanish Club experienced an enriching cultural excursion on April 9 as Spanish teacher Carmen Gracia led 18 students on a field trip to the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.
The group attended the traveling exhibition “Frida: The Making of an Icon,” a comprehensive showcase celebrating the life, work, and enduring influence of renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
The exhibition featured more than 30 original works by Kahlo, alongside over 120 pieces created by five generations of artists inspired by her legacy. Since the mid-1970s, Kahlo has achieved remarkable global recognition, becoming one of the few female artists whose widespread appeal rivals that of iconic figures such as Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Andy Warhol.
In addition to exploring the Kahlo exhibit, students toured other collections within the museum, gaining broader exposure to diverse artistic styles and historical periods. Following their visit, the group enjoyed lunch at a local restaurant before beginning their return trip to Yorktown, which included a brief stop along the way.
The outing provided students with a valuable opportunity to engage with worldclass art and deepen their appreciation for Hispanic culture. Gracia was commended for organizing an educational and memorable experience for her students.
