The excitement of the UIL 4A Area 27-28 meet echoed through Gobbler Stadium on April 16, as track and field fans gathered to witness strong competition among the best athletes from Districts 27-4A and 28-4A.
The Cuero High School track team made an impressive mark at the competition, with several athletes qualifying for upcoming Regionals at Texas A&M Kingsville on May 1-2. The team’s hard work and dedication put forth by each athlete and their coaches throughout the season made qualifying that much sweeter.
On the girls’ side, Alesia Chapman delivered a strong performance in the shot put, finishing in 3rd place. Following suit, Elena Gomez had an outstanding day, clinching 1st place in the 800-meter run and finishing 2nd in the 400-meter dash, breaking a new school record with a time of 58.0.
The Lady Gobblers also shined as a collective unit with the Girls’ 4x200m relay team securing a commendable 3rd place. The quartet, comprised of Brooklynn Bland, Taylor Gayle, Demi Morrow, and Elena Gomez, were on point with their efforts and exchange zones, proving that teamwork can bring noteworthy results.
Turning to the boy’s side, it was evident that Cuero's talent runs deep. Jayden Winfield brought in a solid performance, landing in 3rd place in the shotput competition. Conner Whittley followed closely, securing 4th place in the discus. Jake Janssen finished out 3rd place in the pole vault. All three athletes have demonstrated progression throughout the season and will be ones to watch at Regionals.
Jossiah Taylor emerged as a standout performer, capturing 1st place in the triple jump and 2nd in the long jump. His exceptional performance places him as one of the top competitors heading into Regionals. Pierce Denson also made headlines, securing 2nd in the triple jump and 4th in the high jump, marking promising potential for his future in track and field.
In the sprinting events, Jaxon Marie finished 4th in the 110m hurdles and Paydon Flores represented Cuero well in the 300m hurdles, finishing 2nd in a competitive field. Rounding out the successes, the 4x400m relay team, composed of Janssen, Lincoln Orosco, Flores, and Taylor, claimed 3rd place, sending them to TAMUK.
As preparations ramp up for the Regional meet, Cuero's athletes are entering this next phase filled with confidence and determination. The camaraderie shown throughout the meet and the commitment to training signify that Cuero is ready to leave its mark at Regionals. The spirit of competition is alive in Cuero, promising a thrilling continuation of their track journey to State.
