Texas Lutheran University was the scene of an exciting best-of-three playoff series between the Cuero Lady Gobblers and the Pleasanton Lady Eagles, April 23-24. Fans gathered to witness fast-paced softball action during the Bi-District Championship, with the Lady Gobblers coming on top by winning both games decisively.
The first game started on a tense note for the Lady Gobblers. The Pleasanton Lady Eagles quickly took an early lead in the top of the first, scoring two runs thanks to a couple of solid hits and a defensive error from Cuero. However, the Lady Gobblers were not to be discouraged. In the bottom half of the same inning, the team rallied back. Natalie Taylor and Reagan Reitz both connected for singles, driving in runs. Lexie Herrera followed up with a crucial hit that brought Reitz home, giving Cuero a 4-2 lead to end the inning.
From that point forward, it was clear that the Lady Gobblers were in control. They methodically added runs during the next three innings, displaying impressive teamwork and powerful batting. By the bottom of the sixth, the Gobblers erupted for a staggering five-run inning, propelled by sensational hits from Bailey Morrow, Laela Mendiola, Natalie Taylor, and Demi Morrow, sealing the game with a final score of 12-2. Mendiola and Demi Morrow both went 3 for 4 at the plate.
Natalie Taylor delivered an outstanding performance as the starting pitcher, striking out five batters while allowing only three hits in six innings. Her efforts on the mound were complemented by consistent offensive output from the lineup, which ensured that Cuero would start the series on a high note.
The second matchup took place the following day, April 24, and the momentum stayed firmly in the hands of the Lady Gobblers. Julianna Cox had a standout performance, driving in four runs with a spectacular double in the second inning and a home run in the fifth. The Lady Gobblers displayed offensive firepower with an outstanding nine hits throughout the game.
Pitcher Natalynn Milliorn continued the excellent outing for Cuero, striking out six batters and allowing just three hits. The team's defense remained steadfast, supporting the solid pitching and aggressive batting on display. Taylor went 2 for 2 at the plate, while Cox’s contributions were crucial in driving the team forward.
When the final out was recorded in the bottom of the fifth, Cuero Lady Gobblers stood victorious with an 11-0 win, claiming a spot in the next round of playoffs with an impressive sweep over the Pleasanton Lady Eagles.
Softball fans can look forward to following the Cuero Lady Gobblers as they continue their quest for a State Title. Next up will be the Area Championship with a threegame series vs. Fredericksburg, beginning Wednesday, April 29 in Wimberley.
