Four Yorktown Secondary School students traveled to Kingsville to earn their Texas Cattle Feeders Association Feedyard Technician Certification April 22-23.
Andrew Hahn, Brody Metting, Addison Corpus and Percy Torres all received the certifications that require both handson skill and technical knowledge, according to YISD officials.
“This certification prepares students for careers in the livestock industry and gives them a competitive edge as they enter the workforce or continue their education,” officials said.
The students are enrolled in YISD’s Advanced Animal Science class that is taught by Emmalee Alatorre.
The students toured the King Ranch Feedyard where they were introduced to real world experience and worked alongside industry professionals to prepare for the certification. The following day they took a written exam and a hands-on evaluation judging proper implantation techniques, administering subcutaneous and intramuscular injections and a formal interview. The testing applied to not only knowledge but also their professionalism and communication skills.
