Here's little Raleigh, a new arrival at Pet Adoptions of Cuero.
He is only 3 months old — a beautiful brown labrador retriever combo. With- in his first days at the shelter, he was given a round of shots, vet tests for parasites and other health issues, flea treatments and will be neutered at maturity of PAOC’s nickel.

Most importantly Raleigh has been microchipped. The PAOC staff requires that all pets in this shelter system have this important identifying invisible marker for many reasons. The chip is inserted at the back of the pet's neck and is only about the size of a grain of rice.
Cats and dogs receive their own unique coded chip which gives them a lifetime of verification and identification. Even the most guarded and supervised indoor pet can escape either by accident or mistake. Often a nonfamily member leaves a door or window open unknowingly.
More and more Good Samaritans usually find a pet, take it to a shelter or vet and immediately it will be checked for a chip. The owner can be contacted, and the pet is returned home instead of becoming just another stray pet taking up kennel or cage space at an already overcrowded shelter.
Pet owners are seriously encouraged to have their pets chipped as an average of one in three pets will go missing in their lifetime. The chip can also help solve a stolen pet situation. If a stolen pet is taken to a vet for any reason the vet will cross check and verify ownership.
PAOC uses AKC Reunite Chips for all pets at the shelter and it is included in the adoption package. Pet owners with unchipped pets can watch for Vet specials on microchipping but the average chip fee and registration is around $35 to $45. It is well worth the peace of mind for your cherished family pet to be chipped.
