My Fellow Cueroites: Loving the greenery since the slow steady rain the last few weeks, and the burn ban has been lifted as well.
The regular City Council meeting was held on April 13, the council received the annual financial audit report from Melissa Terry. The city is in a sound financial state.
The Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) met on Tuesday April 14. The Hometown Harvest Dinner on Monday, April 27, and an out-of-town field trip to the Great Texas Air Show at Joint Base Randolph on May 2 were the main topics of discussion. The MYC will assist in bussing tables at the dinner as a community project. The Air Force Thunderbirds (F-16) aerial demonstration team and the F-22 Raptor (5th generation fighter) will be the main event at the air show in San Antonio.
On April 17, the Governor’s Small Business Summit was held in Cuero. The Governor’s office chose 15 cities in Texas this year as host cities. It was an honor to host the event. I delivered the welcome and opening remarks to the capacity crowd. Local business leaders sat on discussion panels pertaining to small business start-up and maintenance, panelist members included Mr. Greg Gossett (Ful-O-Pep), Wayne Oates (Engine Service/Cuero Lube and Tire) and Shannon Henson (Exibix), Renee Wilke from Leather Creations was also featured. Thank you, Maggie Cromeens (Cuero Development Corporation) and Angie Cuellar (Chamber of Commerce) for all the hard work. Many favorable remarks were heard.
Later in the evening, Senior’s parents’ night was celebrated at the Cuero High School Gobbler Baseball game. Thank you to all the Seniors on the team, well done.
On Monday, April 20, the American Legion met at their regular monthly meeting. Two young ladies from Cuero High School, who are being sponsored to the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin this June, met and spoke to the membership. The young ladies explained why they want to attend the program. Lilah Hardy (MYC, Vice President) and Amber Siedel were selected to attend.
The Cuero Development Corporation met on April 21. A business retention grant was approved for Wagner’s Hardware to update the Stihl tools and products displays. Wagner’s Hardware is the only authorized Stihl dealer in Cuero. A grant was also approved to Shane and Renee Wilke for the purchase of DJ equipment, which will greatly enhance their current capability.
An AG luncheon was conducted on April 22 at the Anne Frair Thomas Homemaking complex. Participants heard presentations from Brooklyn Clements, South Texas Economic and Energy Roundtable (STEER) Director, and Charlie Leal, State Legislative Director with the Texas Farm Bureau. Anthony Netardus and Greg Gossett reported on the recent Cuero Livestock show. The Cuero Livestock show raised 1.7 million dollars for the participants this year, what an awesome record- breaking show.
On April 23, Angie Cuellar, Chamber Director and myself, toured the renovation progress at the old FAIR building. Asbestos abatement is near completion and gutting of the building is 80 percent completed. We also visited the Cuero Record office, which was in the process of being emptied. (The Cuero Record will continue to be published, and the Chamber of Commerce is assisting in taking payments and providing newspapers to the public.)
I finished the week with a presentation on Boys and Girls State at the Cuero Rotary Club. The Rotary Club surprised me with an offer to fund two more Cuero High School Juniors for the Boys and Girls State program.
