Cuero Municipal Library observed the 30th anniversary of National Poetry Month in April with two Saturday workshops for children led by program coordinator Linda Thamm.
A story poem,“ There Once Was a Puffin’ by Frances Page Jaques, was the inspiration for the writing and art project. Pictures of the Atlantic Ocean seabird inspired the students to create images of puffins.
Puffins have striking appearances with large colorful bills, a waddling gait and bright orange webbed feet leading to them being known as the “Clown of the Sea.”
The children drew pictures of the seabird and wrote poems about them. Then they read their poems aloud. One second grade homeschool student drew a “Sea Parrot” wearing a beach hat and eating an ice cream cone.
A celebrity guest, therapy dog Pebbles also attended the workshop. The dog belongs to Shanna Burge, who also assisted in the workshop.
