The Yorktown High School track and field program delivered a strong showing at the UIL Region IV-2A Track Meet, held May 1–2 at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, with two athletes earning coveted berths to the state meet.
Leading the way for the Kitty Kats, senior pole vaulter Hayle Russell captured the regional championship with a vault of 10 feet, continuing a dominant postseason run that included first-place finishes at the district and area levels. Russell’s consistency has established her as one of the top competitors in Class 2A heading into the state meet.
Yorktown’s girls also saw strong performances in the field and on the track. Sophomore Trinity Flores placed fifth in the triple jump, while junior Claire Person finished sixth in the same event. On the track, sophomore Palyn Koopmann narrowly missed advancing to state, finishing third in the 300-meter hurdles and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles. The 4x400-meter relay team of Paige Deleon, Flores, Koopmann, and Person qualified for the finals and placed eighth overall.
For the Wildcats, senior thrower Ryan Knostman delivered a standout performance in the discus, recording a throw of 172 feet, 7 inches. The mark not only secured a second-place finish and a trip to state, but also shattered his own school record by 20 feet. Knostman also placed fourth in the shot put, adding to an impressive regional outing.
Senior Brody Metting narrowly missed qualification in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing third—just one spot shy of advancing.
Russell and Knostman will represent Yorktown at the UIL State Track and Field Championships, scheduled for May 14–16 in Austin.
