The 4A Girls State Golf Tournament held at the Legends Golf Course in Kingsland on May 4-5 proved to be a memorable event, especially for Cuero’s own Catherine 'Cat' Chilek.
This tournament marked a significant milestone, as it was the first time in 10 years that a Lady Gobbler golfer qualified for state, underscoring Cat's remarkable achievement under the guidance of her coach, Mary Kate Goebel.
When asked about her emotions upon qualifying for state, Cat expressed her excitement. 'I was very excited when I heard that I qualified for state,' she said. After shooting her lowest round at Regionals, Cat realized she had a genuine chance and was thrilled to officially make the state cut.
Throughout the season, Cat focused on improving specific aspects of her game. 'My swing overall improved the most,' she noted, attributing much of this progress to the invaluable help she received from her coaches. However, the journey was not without its challenges. Cat identified the mental aspect of the game as her biggest hurdle this year. 'I am still learning how to move on from bad shots and focusing on what I can fix rather than the negatives.'
During the state tournament, Cat faced a notoriously difficult course but performed admirably, shooting a respectable 90 on day one and an impressive 86 on day two. She finished 31st out of 72 golfers, a commendable position considering the competitive field.
Reflecting on her season, Cat highlighted a standout moment. 'My favorite moment was definitely when I finally broke 80 at regionals shooting a 76. I felt great that day and had an awesome outcome!' This achievement not only marked a personal victory but also added to her experience heading into the state competition.
When asked about her favorite club in her bag, Cat mentioned her driver. 'Even though it can cause me some trouble, when I hit it so good it results in a great hit,' she said, showcasing her love for the game’s adrenaline.
If given the chance, Cat expressed a desire to play a round with LPGA star Nelly Korda, whom she admires for her skill and professionalism. 'She's a great LPGA player and I would love to have the chance to play with her,' Cat shared, demonstrating her ambitions and aspirations within the sport.
Despite feeling that she didn’t perform as well as she hoped at state, her gratitude for the opportunity was evident. 'My state round didn't go as I wanted, but I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to play at state. Next year I will do better!' Her competitive spirit and determination shine through, indicating a promising future. Coach Adam Arroyo praised Cat for her exceptional season, acknowledging that there’s more to come in her senior year. 'Cat had an exceptional season as a junior and there will definitely be more to come her senior year,' he stated. With a strong group of returning players, the Lady Gobblers are set to make another push for state contention next year, fueled by Cat's inspiring journey and dedication to the game.
