The excitement in Beeville was electric as the Cuero Lady Gobblers faced off against the Ingleside Lady Mustangs in the Regional Semi-finals on May 6-7.
This highly anticipated showdown brought together two of the top teams, and fans were eager to see who would advance. However, the Lady Gobblers ultimately fell to their opponent, who handed them two tough losses.
The first game proved challenging for the Gobblers. Despite a valiant effort, they fell short, losing 2-4 to Ingleside. The Mustangs showcased their strength at the plate, racking up a total of 10 hits compared to Cuero’s 4. Caroline Kubesch led the offensive charge for the Lady Gobblers, managing to go 2 for 3 with key hits in the third and seventh innings.
In games like these, every play matters. The Lady Mustangs got off to a strong start, with two runs scored in the bottom of the second, powered by a double followed by a single. Cuero answered back in the third, capitalizing on a defensive error by Ingleside to bring in both of their own runs. However, the Lady Mustangs responded in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two more runs on a sacrifice fly and a line drive to center, capitalizing on scoring opportunities.
As the game wound down, Cuero found themselves in a tough spot in the seventh. Kubesch's single gave them hope, but they were unable to convert it into any runs, sealing a narrow defeat at 2-4. Natalie Taylor pitched commendably for the Lady Gobblers, going six innings, but the combined efforts of the Mustangs proved to be too much.
The following day, the stakes were raised as the teams squared off once again. This game displayed excellent pitching from both sides right from the start. The Gobblers struck first when Taylor’s twoout double drove in Julianna Cox, who had previously singled. This lead held firm until the seventh inning when the Lady Mustangs fought back, capitalizing on an opportunity to tie the game with a sacrifice fly, making it 1-1.
With the game heading into extra innings, the tension reached a boiling point. In the eighth inning, Ingleside delivered critical hits, including a spectacular triple that helped score the go-ahead runs. As the Lady Mustangs built on their momentum, the Gobblers found themselves trailing 3-1.
Despite starting the bottom of the eighth with a single from Natalynn Milliorn, Cuero faced a tough break when a courtesy runner was called out due to offensive interference. Cox managed to double again, and Taylor followed up with another double to put runners in scoring position. However, despite the close work and determination, the Lady Gobblers could not bring the runners home, resulting in a heartbreaking conclusion to their season.
Milliorn pitched a commendable eight innings for Cuero, racking up six strikeouts and allowing no earned runs, however the series ended with a final score of 3-1 in favor of the Lady Mustangs. This marked the end of a competitive season for the Lady Gobblers, who fought hard and showcased their talent on the field. Cuero finished their season 21-14-1, Bi-District, and Area Champions.
