American Legion Post 3 in Cuero hosted a Memorial Day service on May 25. Charlie Murray of the Texas Heroes Museum in La Grange was the guest speaker. He highlighted several heroes from DeWitt County like Medal of Honor winner Raul “Roy” Perez Benavidez who was born in Lindenau for his heroism during the Vietnam War in 1968 for saving eight men while receiving numerous wounds during a six-hour firefight and Harlon Block who was born in Yorktown and was one of the flag raisers immortalized in the photo “Raising the Flag in Iwo Jima” in World War II shortly before being killed in action in 1945. This is the first time Charlie Murray had ever made a presentation about Texas Heroes Museum. It reportedly is one of the best kept museum secrets in Texas. There were about 50 attending the service.
