Juvenile charged with second degree felony after fatal vehicle crash

An unlicensed juvenile from Victoria evading arrest in Cuero collided with another vehicle, resulting in the death of that car’s driver May 29 at about 1:45 a.m., according to a Texas Department of Public Safety press release.

Cuero Chief of Police Steve Ellis said the juvenile who was injured in the crash and transported for medical treatment to Cuero Regional Hospital with minor injuries was later charged with evading arrest in a vehicle resulting in a death which is a second-degree felony.

The deceased driver was identified as Dwayne Kent Morris, 66, of Cuero. Morris was pronounced deceased at the scene by DeWitt County Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 Judge Ruppert at approximately 1:47 a.m.

The investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety indicated a Cuero Police Department officer conducted a traffic stop on a 2016 Ford F-250 driven by the unlicensed juvenile. As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver fled the scene and traveled southbound on North Terry Street.

Investigators determined the driver failed to stop at the intersection of North Terry Street and East Broadway Street and collided with the 2014 Ford F-150 driven by Morris, who was traveling westbound on East Broadway Street.

After impact, the 2014 Ford F-150 traveled across the oncoming lanes of East Broadway Street, struck a utility pole, and came to rest in the front yard of a residence. The 2016 Ford F-250 entered a left-side skid after impact, crossed the oncoming lanes of East Broadway Street, overturned, and came to rest upright in the yard of the same residence.
