Finding good homes for all the homeless dogs and cats at Pet Adoptions of Cuero is always a priority. But Pet Safety education is so important too, especially as we head into the hot summer months.
The pets need extra care and safe living conditions. Here's a checklist to consider when caring for pets in 90 degree and plus Texas temperatures:
• Prepare for the 4th of July. Pets will bolt and run off. Make sure they have a safe indoor secure place to be during the festivities.
• Provide a shady, ventilated resting place — not an enclosed doghouse.
• Provide clean water, making sure bowls are replenished with fresh, cool water daily.
• Prepare for daily walks or runs. Look for grassy areas. Concrete gets superhot, so if you can't walk on it barefooted you should not expect your pet to either. Avoid walks in the middle of the day
• Watch for snakes and other pet enemies. Patrol areas your pet may safely roam. In addition to snakes, skunks, coyotes and owls could be after tiny kittens
• Treat for Fleas and ticks. provide proper meds for flea and tick prevention and inspect your pet regularly for a hidden tick or two.
• Remember grooming. Bathing, brushing and trimming is needed to help your pet enjoy the season.
• Avoid the big pet owner “no-nos.” No pet should be chained up for longer than a short potty break. Food and meals need to be elevated or secured from ants and other insects. Prevention will keep your pet from digesting various painful parasites.
