De Witt County Historical Commission continues to collect names and stories of families with a connection to the American Revolution of 1776, and the deadline for inclusion is June 20.
A list of names will be displayed during programs presented on July 3-4 in conjunction with Cuero’s America 250 Celebration. Stories of De-Witt County ancestors who lived during the American Revolution will be highlighted in the programs.
Following U S independence from Great Britain, family members migrated to Texas and brought with them their desire for a representative government, resulting in Texas seeking independence from Mexico. The program will be presented at the English German School at 3:30 p.m.on Friday, July 3, and repeated at the Municipal Park Clubhouse on Saturday, July 4, following the parade.
The programs will also include local history in the late 1700’s. The themes will be Native American tribes, Spanish explorers and their missions and the cattle drives to Louisiana to provide beef to be shipped up the Mississippi to supply the Continental Army.
Forms for recording your ancestor’s name and story are being circulated around the county. There are forms in the lobby of the DeWitt County Weber Annex Building, 115 N. Gonzales St. with a box in which to drop them.
Forms can also be mailed to DeWitt County Historical Commission, 115 N. Gonzales St, Box 8, Cuero, TX 77954.
Get them in by June 20 to be included in the list of patriot families. For more information, call Peggy Ledbetter, Chair, DCHC, 361648-0003.
