Camp R.O.A.R. (Reaching Outstanding Academic Results) is underway at Yorktown Elementary, with more than 80 incoming first through fifth grade students participating throughout the month of June.

Now in its sixth year, the camp has become a popular summer tradition for Yorktown families. The program gives students an opportunity to continue learning during the summer while enjoying activities that keep them active, engaged, and excited about coming to school.

The first week of camp featured the theme 'Carnival Craze.' Throughout the week, students took part in a variety of activities that connected reading, math, science, art, and physical activity to a carnival setting.

Students worked on reading and phonics skills through themed stories, vocabulary activities, and literacy games. In math, they practiced concepts such as measurement, graphing, geometry, multiplication, and probability through hands-on activities and challenges.

Science and engineering activities were a favorite among many campers. Students designed balloon rockets, built roller coasters, tested catapults, and explored concepts involving motion, force, and problem-solving. These projects encouraged students to work together, make observations, and learn through trial and error.

Campers also enjoyed a variety of creative projects, including carnival-themed artwork, as well as games and relay races that kept students moving throughout the day.

One of the highlights of the week was a walking field trip to the Yorktown Public Library for a Big Time Bubbles presentation. Students learned about the science behind bubbles while enjoying a fun outdoor demonstration.

Yorktown Elementary Principal Stephanie Zigmond said the program provides an opportunity for students to continue learning while enjoying their summer break. 'It's such a wonderful feeling knowing that our elementary students have the opportunity to keep their skills sharp while having fun at school,' Zigmond said. 'The building looks different during the summer months, but hearing the familiar laughter and excitement fill the halls makes the transition into summer something everyone can get excited about.'

Camp R.O.A.R. will continue throughout June with upcoming themes including Summer Safari, Mad Science, and Let's Build. Each week will bring new activities and learning experiences for students. If the energy and excitement of the first week are any indication, Camp R.O.A.R. is set for another successful summer of learning, exploration, and fun.
