Good day Yorktown, It is my pleasure to report to you on matters involving the City of Yorktown and Yorktown in general. I also have an item to share regarding our small community.
First, I would like to commend Katie Newman, Executive Director of the Yorktown ChamberofCommerce, and the Chamber of Commerce for efforts to keep the summer calendar fun and busy for Yorktown citizens. Events include the following: A Pickleball Camp for all ages will be held in City Park on June 17–19. The camp will offer a fun, relaxed, and educational experience for participants. A modest fee will apply.
On June 27, 2026, the Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the inaugural Stars & Stripes Summer Social in City Park. The event will feature live music, youth and adult activities, pet events, and a fireworks show, all in a family- and pet-friendly setting.
On July 14, 2026, Yorktown Economic Development will host the Small Business Development Center of Texas A&M University– Victoria for a Lunch and Learn session titled Practical Social Media. Seating is limited to twenty people and lunch will be provided.
Additional summer happenings include Yorktown Game Days, sponsored and hosted by local supporters. These events include Bingo at Aunt Di’s, Bunco at 5D Yorktown, Bingo at the Fire Station for senior citizens, Bingo at the Library for senior citizens, and Crafts at the Library for teens and up. Events will be at various times and locations; please contact the Chamber of Commerce for details.
The Yorktown Historical Society will host Bingo and Homemade Ice Cream on Friday, July 3, 2026, at the Yorktown Historical Museum. Everyone is welcome.
The Yorktown Public Library Summer Reading Program for 2026 kicked off on June 3, 2026, with fun reading- related events for children ages 2–12.
Starting in August, Friends of the Library will sponsor Market Days. I will share additional information as the date nears. The event will be in Yorktown City Park.
From a local perspective and on a personal level, I would ask that you become informed and involved related to the upcoming change regarding the DeWitt County Judge position. Our current County Judge, Daryl Fowler, has always made himself available, whether in person or by phone. We have agreed at times and disagreed at others, but he has always been cordial and accessible, and I respect that. By contrast, the apparent successor has been far less communicative regarding his future constituents. As a Yorktown citizen, City Council representative, and DeWitt County taxpayer, I find that troubling, and I believe others should as well. It is past time for the Judge elect to introduce himself to Yorktown and frankly everywhere West of the Guadalupe River. I am hopeful this situation will rectify itself soon, but as citizens of Yorktown and western DeWitt County, we would be remiss not to stay engaged and make our voices heard.
I hope you have enjoyed the rain as much as I have. It is such a pleasure to see the green countryside. Have a wonderful day Yorktown.
Bill B. Baker Mayor City of Yorktown
