There was a hit movie in 1960 called 'Where the Boys Are,' but I wish there was a movie today called 'Where the Pups Are' because Pet Adoptions of Cuero would be broadcasting it nonstop.
The PAOC rescue and shelter has been in existence for 15 years, and in all that time there have been ups and downs in the volume of homeless pets, but truly 2026 is a record breaker. The facts are that more and more litters are being born, but fewer and fewer adopters are coming forward to adopt.
Shelters all across the USA are facing the same dilemma — too many canines and felines are being brought to nonprofit shelters as well as city- and county-run shelters to be dropped off. More and more animals are being dumped on county roads or abandoned in any and every place imaginable. Landlords are taking back their rental properties and discovering a fur baby family was left behind. The general public is not stepping up to spay and neuter, and in many cases local vets are unable to handle the volume of 'fixing' that needs to be done on a timely basis.
PAOC is encouraging anyone who can commit to pet ownership to please visit our shelter or the Cuero City Animal Shelter to help lessen the load and take in a vetted pet. There are dogs of all sizes, multiple breeds to choose from and a wide range of ages — from 3- to 6-month-old pups, teen pups, adult dogs and, best of all, some very mellow senior dogs.
Likewise, there are choices galore in cats and kittens. Pet Adoptions of Cuero is open all seven days every week from 8 a.m. until noon, or call for a late-afternoon adoption visit at 361-2438540. The shelter is located at 407 U.S. Highway 183 South in Cuero.
Here are two recent terrier-schnauzer mix pups — Cagney and Lacy — that would love to have a forever home soon.
