Yorktown prepares for Stars & Stripes Celebration
Patriotic pride, live music, contests and fireworks will take center stage June 27 as Yorktown hosts its annual Stars & Stripes Celebration in City Park.
The family-friendly event begins at 5 p.m. in front of the Yorktown Public Library with the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem performed by Justin Trevino and Jonathan Guerrero of Yorktown- based Verdigo.
One of the evening's highlights will be the patriotic parade at 5:30 p.m. Organizers encourage participants to dress in red, white and blue and decorate wagons, bicycles, strollers and other entries for the All-American Parade.
Throughout the evening, attendees can enjoy a variety of contests and activities, including a youth car and truck show from 6-8 p.m., a homemade ice cream contest, salsa contest, dessert contest and appetizer contest.
Entries for the homemade ice cream contest should be turned in at 6:30 p.m. at the Big Pavilion, with judging taking place from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Contest organizers said the winner will be determined by People's Choice voting, giving attendees a chance to sample entries and select their favorite.
The youth car and truck show will also feature People's Choice voting, allowing visitors to support local youth participants while choosing their favorite vehicle.
The community's patriotic spirit will be on display beyond the park grounds as judges evaluate entries in the home and business decorating contest on June 26. Winners of the pet photo contest, which closes for entries June 20, will also be announced during the celebration.
Live music featuring Matt Thigpen, Dr. Gordon Barth and David Williams will take the stage from 7-10 p.m.
People's Choice winners and other contest winners will be announced at the Big Pavilion shortly after 8 p.m.
Food trucks will be on site throughout the evening, and hot dogs will be available for purchase.
The celebration will conclude with a fireworks display presented by Skinny's Fireworks at approximately 9 p.m.
Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and enjoy an evening of entertainment, community fellowship and patriotic celebration.
