Members of the Mueller-Schaffner American Legion Post No. 369 heard from this year's Texas Boys State representative and discussed plans for their participation in Cuero's Fourth of July celebration during the organization's June 22 meeting.
The American Legion post, Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion met in a joint session at the post home following a potluck meal. Connor Thigpen, who represented the Westhoff post at Texas Boys State June 7-12 in Austin, led the Pledge of Allegiance before sharing highlights from his week at the American Legion-sponsored leadership and government program for high school students.
The meeting also highlighted the post's long history of sponsoring local students to attend Texas Boys State. A photo shared by the organization features Thigpen alongside Denis Mueller, who attended Texas Boys State in 1968 after also being sponsored by the Westhoff American Legion.
Members also discussed plans for the organization's participation in Cuero's Independence Day celebration at the Cuero Municipal Park Pavilion.
From 5 to 7 p.m. July 4, the post will operate a 'Country Store' featuring Bibles, plants, caps, patriotic bracelets, flags, canned goods, patriotic items, baked goods, fresh vegetables and other merchandise in honor of the nation's 250th birthday. Members said they hope the display will create interest in the organization.
Junior Auxiliary members Audrey and Cindy Jo Burnett attended the meeting and displayed patriotic bracelets they made for the Country Store. Members praised the sisters for their work and contributions to the upcoming event.
Before adjourning, members were reminded to fly the United States flag during the Independence Day holiday. The next regular meeting of the Mueller- Schaffner American Legion Post No. 369, Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion is scheduled for Sept. 28.
