On Tuesday, Sept. 17 the Kitty Kat volleyball team traveled to Nixon to play against the Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs. The Nixon-Smiley team has an overall 3-11 record. The teams faced earlier in the season with Yorktown coming out on top and the Kitty Kats repeated that outcome during this matchup. Yorktown defeated Nixon-Smiley in four sets, 25-15, 25-27, 25-14, and 2519.
In set one, the first ten points were back and forth as neither team scored consecutive points. The Kitty Kats won by a large margin and the majority of the lead was extended when Malayshia Thomas was at the service line. Thomas concluded by serving out the last five points.
In the second set, the Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs led 4-9 when Head Coach Ashtyn Henkes signaled timeout. The Kitty Kats would make a run and take over the lead 15-13 forcing a Nixon- Smiley timeout. However, the Lady Mustangs reclaimed the lead at point 19 and continued until turning the ball over, 20-18. The Yorktown team showed determination and refusal to give up as they charged back, overtaking the Nixon-Smiley squad, 22-20. The Lady Mustangs called their final timeout. The set became all square at point 23. The Lady Mustangs added one more point to the scoreboard but the Yorktown team did also, tying the set again at point 24. Yorktown took the lead 25-24 before the Mustangs went on a short run to win the set, 27-25. This time most of the points were earned when senior Sydnie Krueger was serving as she was able to tally eight points.
