McLeods to the rescue: Couple helps Opal the sheep dog

Recently some longtime Pet Adoptions of Cuero supporters, Milt and Kathy McLeod arrived at the Highway 183 shelter with a lovely dog. It had obviously been abandoned on an out of town country road. Unfortunately this is becoming the norm across the state – dogs, puppies, kittens – all dumped on country roads with no chance of survival unless a compassionate human happens to discover them.

The McLeod’s knew the right thing to do was to pick it up and then work to find a solution. Once at the shelter, it was discovered that the dog had been microchipped and the owners were contacted. But they did not want the dog back! PAOC was completely full so they could only bathe the dog and give it a flea pill. The McLeod’s graciously offered to take it home and check their resources and help in any way for a possible re-homing.

So here’s the Wonderful Part of Opal’s story…… Opal was a beautiful well-mannered sheep dog with the most gorgeous coat of colors and she wasted no time in charming the McLeods. At the time the Mc-Leods were “dog-less” so the timing was so right for Opal to hope she would be getting a new forever home. Just a few weeks later the McLeod’s returned to Pet Adoptions of Cuero with Opal in tow and verified that she was definitely now a Mc-Leod too.

The crew at PAOC were thrilled to hear this saga of another abandoned fur baby that will have a truly happy, happy ending. Every shelter in the state is hoping more people will step up, take a dog in on a trial basis or offer to foster ones that have spent too many days and months in small kennels and runs. Shelters are overcrowded, understaffed, lacking enough volunteers, under funded trying to cover vet bills and supply bills but every day somehow all the pets are fed, watered, cleaned, socialized and cared for.

The big FOUR requests for Pet Adoptions of Cuero or any local shelter: Adopt, Foster, Volunteer and/ or Donate would be the answer to every shelter’s prayers.
