Students and Parents: It is never too early for your industrious student to begin planning for a college career, so the Cuero Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3972 & Auxiliary are sponsoring two opportunities for Cuero-area youth to start earning scholarship money for their future. The first is Patriot’s Pen, an essay contest for students in grades 6-8; the second is the Voice of Democracy, a recorded essay contest for students in grades 9-12 of high school. The Cuero VFW and Auxiliary will award a combined $1,170 to local winners in these competitions; the first-place winners advance to District competition, then State, and then National.
The Patriot Pen’s theme for this year is “My Voice in America’s Democracy?” The essay should be 300-400 typewritten words. Cuero ISD, Westhoff ISD, and Meyersville ISD schools have been given contest rules and qualifying information. Each firstplace State winner receives a minimum of $500 and the first-place national winner $5,000. Total winnings at these levels amount to $1.4 million.
The current theme for the Voice of Democracy contest is: “Is America Today Our Forefathers’ Vision?” Typewritten essays should be submitted along with a 3-5 minute voice recording on disc or thumb drive. Qualifying information and entry forms are available in the Counselors’ office of Cuero High School.
Local winners advance to District, State, and then National competition, with monetary winnings at each level. The State winner in the VOD contest will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. where the top prize is $30,000 for VOD.
“We hope students and parents will take this challenge seriously, because winnings such as these can put a nice dent into tuition and other college expenses,” said Mrs. Hartman.
The deadline for each competition is Thursday, October 31. Homeschooled students are also eligible and may contact Barbara Hartman, Auxiliary President, at 361-277-8187 for registration material. If any questions or comments occur, they may also be directed to Mrs. Hartman.
