Almost 200 more people attended the Second Annual Touch-a-Truck on Saturday than the first year’s attendance of 380.
Event sponsor Friends of DeWitt County Children started the Toucha- Truck at the Cuero VFW as an activity for kids and families to do together when school is out and receive a free meal as well.
According to the group’s director, Katie Klores, the Friends of DeWitt County Children also wanted to raise awareness of their mission to support foster and kinship care families.
“We wanted to let the community know we’re here,” Klores said. “So later, they can contact us for assistance and also support our other events.”
About 30 vehicles from almost 20 organizations parked in the VFW field off Highway 183 with the highly popular Lifeflight helicopter parked next to the road. A four-wheeler pulled a train of kid-sized cars around the various vehicles, so children could get an overall idea of the various machines they could visit.
From first responder vehicles to tractors to buses to backhoes, kids could climb on and learn about the fascinating machines to their hearts’ content. The first half hour was no sound for the younger ears and then sirens sounded off as well as PA systems.
Inside the VFW, agencies that support the Friends mission included the Gabriel Project, FBC Cares, Head Start, Pilot Club, Cuero Municipal Library, Discovery Toys, Cuero ISD Early Learning Center and Golden Crescent Moms.
This year an entry/ exit tent accepted donations, which totalled more than $1,000. Other events coming up include the back-to-school supply donations at the Cuero Municipal Library and a masquerade murder mystery dinner event on Sept. 28.
