Editor’s Note: This column was scheduled for the September 25 issue GOD first... Heavenly Father, we know that You know what is in our hearts when we pray. Those who pray for material things and wishful things can't be answered and if they are, it will be given only through Your own Amazing Grace. As our hearts open up to You, help us in all we do for those around us and grant us assurance that through Your will, it will be answered. We pray in the name of our Dear Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Pray for those who are ill, suffering, grieving, or are in harm's way.
A man was courting his girlfriend with intentions of possibly making her his wife in some near future. He came down to a small town in Texas, Weesatche in particular, and met the girlfriend's father who owned quite a few acres of land. While the rancher was showing the young man the ranch, the young man had noticed that most ranchers had stock tanks and commented when he saw a particular place that would make an excellent place for a stock tank and it would supply all the water for all his cows. The future and wise old rancher looked him in the eye and said, 'I'd never do such a foolish thing, because if a cow got into such a stock tank and be in over half way deep, the frogs would suck out all the milk and starve their baby calves to death.' He added, 'Do you see what I mean?' The young man agreed. The rancher said, ' I thought so. By the way, where are you from?' The young man proudly answered, 'I'm from North Chicago!' The rancher said, 'I figured as much.'
The only time that Broadway Street in Nordheim has ever been closed was for parades or funerals but never for a whole week.
Maybe when the sewer lines were installed, it might have been closed at that time. It shook up the old timers when they couldn't drive up Broadway. Progress, in the name of Nordheim's sewer and water pipes, was a small price to pay. As of this week, Broadway has again been opened after the extensions have been made and will continue to North Street. If all goes well and we keep getting lots of sunshine, the four-lane highway should be finished in another three weeks.
Looks really good so far.
But please don't stop praying for rain.
Before in house conveniences, people were using outhouses which were located west or southwest or whichever the wind blows the least so the odor didn’t float into the house. Out in the country, it didn’t matter too much. One of my memorial stories I can remember while listening secretly on the phone line on my crystal set was when one of the ladies, on one of her visits, rushed out to the outhouse and was peacefully sublime in her relief, failed to notice a black widow spider being annoyed by the lady and bit her on the behind. To a young kid, this was one of the funniest things I ever heard. Still laughing so hard, my father walked by and asked what was so funny. I couldn’t tell him as it would be a dead giveaway of my secret so I told him I heard it on the radio crystal set. He wanted to know what it was about. I told him some cock and bull story that I don't remember to this day, but it only gave him a slight smile. Whew! Didn’t tell the outhouse story at school because the mother of some of the kids would tell where they heard it. You just don't repeat stories like that on morning telephone kaffee klatchs in those days. I might have a few more one of these days. Later.
Be on the lookout for the next Nordheim Volunteer Fire Department fundraiser with more details. I was promised to have it in the paper this week but all I got was silence. Everybody was too busy I guess. If you see it on facebook, it will fall on the first Monday of October. Pre-meal tickets will be sold by any one of the members of the Fire Department.
Koffee Klatch was held at the home of the Schlinkes as the parish hall was being used by the Lutheran Church Deanery. The coffee was good and the conversation was a bit lively with a lot of goodies to share by our host and friends. There were enough of us oldtimers there to catch up on happenings during the week; some good and some sad. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, so if you are in the vicinity, stop by and visit. You will be glad you did. See you next week.
