The Cuero City Council recognized Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 23-31, in its October meeting with a proclamation encouraging residents to support a drug-free environment by wearing red ribbons. The mayor also encouraged residents to participate in the Fall Cleanup this week through Saturday, by bringing metal, batteries, used motor oil and furniture to 1315 E Broadway.

Council approved extending the agreement with the Community Action Committee of Victoria for weatherization assistance for Cuero residents. This agreement, which typically runs from March 1, 2024, to February 28, 2025, will now take effect from the current date to February 28, 2025, due to a delay.

The allocated amount for this assistance program is $10,000. It’s intended to help residents meet minor upgrade requirements to qualify for additional state-funded weatherization grants. Finance Director Connie Hawes noted that if the program requires more than the allotted $10,000, the committee may request additional funds from Council.

Council also approved the street closures for the First United Methodist Church’s Trunk or Treat event on Thursday, October 31, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the De-Witt County Courthouse Square. The church requested permission to close six streets surrounding the courthouse to provide a safe environment for children trickor- treating from parked cars. These closed streets include Gonzales and Live Oak, Clinton and Live Oak, McLeod and Courthouse, Clinton and Courthouse, Clinton and Gonzales, and Gonzales and Courthouse.

In the Action and Considerations portion, Jeremy and Allison Wamsley of Wamsley Performance requested to host a Dyno Day and Car Show at Cuero Municipal Park on January 25, 2025, with road closures at the park entrance on E. Broadway through Roy Harmon Drive to ensure safety for children and guests. Council unanimously approved their application for the event and road closures. The Wamsleys also inquired about the possibility of using the Cuero Airport for a racing event in 2026, pending further information and coordination with the FAA.

Museum Manager Amber Fitts-Jones and Museum Board Member Gerald Zengerle requested authorization for City Manager Wayne Berger to seek requests for qualifications (RFQs) for architectural services related to the proposed new elevator and other renovations at the Pharmacy Medical Museum. Zengerle highlighted that the late Joe Reuss had left a dedicated fund of $500,000 to support these improvements, with the museum board committed to using the funds and exploring additional grant opportunities for the project. Council approved the request.

Council approved changing the November 2024 City Council meeting date from Monday, November 11, to Tuesday, November 12, in observance of the Veterans Day holiday.
